The Tri-State Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Hub, developed by Tenaska, is a regional initiative aimed at capturing CO₂ emissions from facilities in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania and transporting them to secure underground storage sites. Designed to help businesses meet environmental regulations while creating local economic benefits, the project is structured in multiple phases: pre-development, development, construction, long-term operation, and storage closure. In November 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy selected the Tri-State CCS Hub to negotiate for up to $69 million in federal funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support site characterization studies across four regional carbon storage systems. With over 120 facilities emitting roughly 37 million metric tons of CO₂ annually within a 50-mile radius, the hub represents a significant step toward large-scale regional decarbonization.
